CROWN POINT — A 73-year-old man appeared in court for the first time on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a young female relative for several years before she disclosed the alleged sexual abuse to a family member.

Richard F. Zackiewicz of Lakes of the Four Seasons faces criminal charges of child molestation, child exploitation and possession of child pornography.

A Lake Criminal Court magistrate pleaded not guilty on Zackiewicz’s behalf and advised him to hire a private attorney, records show.

This episode of the ‘Riding Shotgun with NWI Cops’ series takes viewers around Munster in the middle of the festive season.

Lake County Sheriff’s Police opened an investigation Jan. 8 after an 11-year-old revealed to a parent that Zackiewicz had sexually assaulted her and taken nude photos of her for about five years, according to archives.

The girl later told a detective that the alleged sexual abuse began when she was 6 years old and last happened when she was in Zackiewicz’s custody in early January.

She alleged Zackiewicz told her how he hid explicit photos he took of her from those close to her, according to court records.

She told police that if they saw the photos she would smile, but that did not mean she wanted to participate in the sexual abuse. She was smiling because she was afraid she wouldn’t do what Zackiewicz wanted, according to court records.
